The French car market was down 3% on last year with 83,340 sales in August, according to the CCFA.
The CCFA also said that the decline on last year was distorted by differences in the number of reporting days and that the car market actually grew by 1.8% on a comparable number of working days.
Over eight months, car registrations in France totalled 1,185,851 units, up 1.6% on a reported basis and 2.8% on a comparable number of working days. French brands fell 6.8% in August, to 42,558 cars, while foreign brands have edged up 1.2% to 40,782 units. Over eight months, French brands have increased by 6.5% to 664,044 units, while foreign brands fell 4.1% to 521,807 units.
Renault recorded a 10.7% decline in August, while PSA’s sales decline (3.1%) was in line with the overall market drop.
Analysts remain concerned over the fragility of the recovery in Europe’s car market. Concernes have been heightened by recent economic data suggesting that the eurozone’s economic recovery may have slowed.
