Foxconn Technology Group has begun pre production at its Lordstown Motors plant in Ohio, marking a major milestone in the company’s diversification into the electric vehicle (EV) segment.

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, is Apple’s main manufacturing subcontractor from which it derives most of its revenue. It has developed an EV platform complete with powertrain and has established several EV partnerships around the world in the last few years.

Foxconn acquired the former General Motors plant last year from a local management buyout team which had owned the factory since 2019. According to local reports citing a company statement, the plant planned to produce 50 Endurance BEV pickup trucks by the end of the year.

Lordstown was said to need raise additional capital in order to produce its first batch of 450 production trucks which are scheduled to be delivered in the first half of 2023.

CEO Edward Hightower said: “Initial output is moving slowly due parts availability issues.”

The company also plans to produce cars for US EV startup Fisker at the plant.
