Ford is to plough US$52m into increased production capacity for Transit, Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom models in Turkey to satisfy growing customer demand in Europe.

The Ford Otosan joint venture will invest the US$52m in the Kocaeli manufacturing site, Turkey, to expand production by 40,000 units to 330,000 vehicles per year, a more than 12% per cent increase.

Ford is Europe’s No.1 selling commercial vehicle brand with 13.3% per in the first seven months of 2017, fuelled by demand for latest generation Transit models.

New Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom models will launch later this year, followed by a Plug-in Hybrid version to follow in 2019.

The news caps what has already been an exceptionally busy week for the US automaker, which announced its UK arm would introduce a scrappage incentive in what it says is an initiative to drive air quality improvement across Britain.

Ford UK is introducing a scrappage scheme for pre-2010 registered vehicles which applies to all makes and can secure customers up to GBP7,000 off new cars.

In addition, it has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Anhui Zotye Automobile, a major manufacturer of all-electric vehicles in China.
