BMW’s outgoing X5 SUV, launched in 1999, has now sold over 580,000 world-wide and has proved surprisingly popular in the emerging market of China. The launch of a fully redesigned model in the next few months is likely to give the model line a major boost.
Data sourced from BMW’s UK unit shows that, as expected, the US, where the X5 is built in South Carolina, has proved the most popular market with 224,934 sales in the 1999-2005 period. This was followed by Germany (76,550 in the same period.
In China, 10,943 X5s found homes in the 2000-2005 period and 7,615 in Japan. Australia took 12,798 in 2001-2005.
The US again led the way for the January to July 2006 period with 15,985 sales, followed by Germany (5,670), China (2,539), Australia (1,287) and Japan (692).
UK sales, as noted in just-auto’s recent report on the redesigned X5, have ranged from 5,650 in 2001, the model’s first full year on sale here, to a record 10,808 in 2005, the model line’s fifth year on sales with only a few minor updates since launch.
