Nineteen Chinese brands have taken space at the 2006 Colombian motor show in Bogota.
This is seen as big news, not because of their sales, still marginal, but because they now make up almost half of the brands on sale here.
Chery, Chana and Hafei, the first Chinese automakers to reach Colombia two years ago, are in the second hall with their attractive QQ613, CV6 and Lobo, respectively. Eduardo Sardi, head of the importer that represents these brands, said: “the most important thing in this new era is the aftersales back-up. We have more than $US2m invested in spare parts and a nationwide dealer network.”
Lázaro Montes, general manager of the Changhe, BYD and Saic-Wuling importer, whose brands are group are in second place in the Chinese sales list, thinks much the same.
Other new brands in the country are Geely, Zhongxing, Landwind, Golden Dragon, JMC-Isuzu, Foton, Jac, Gonow and a few more taking the total to 19.
