Plastic Omnium is presenting a range of innovations at NAIAS including more intelligent bumpers, lighter and more reactive tailgates.
Integrated radar:
Bumpers include optimally mounted and fully integrated radars, to provide performance using electromagnetic-wave permeable plastics.
Front grille:
Plastic Omnium has developed a three-function front grille which incorporates new technologies: a chrome finish compatible with radars, De-icing system to ensure the grille works in all weathers. An integrated lighting system based on flexible optical fibres.
Impact detection and absorption system:
The supplier offers an impact absorption module incorporating functions ranging from detection systems to improved impact management. The bumper also includes an active aerodynamic system. It is also lighter, reducing CO2 emissions.
Safety and personalisation:
Plastic Omnium has developed a new generation tailgate, made from composites. Thanks to the light, plastic materials, many new aerodynamic and interactive functions can be integrated.
The tailgate can display messages to 'talk' to its surroundings. Many different messages can be displayed on a transparent area which also serves to display the driver's own personalised messages.
Interactive tailgate:
Solutions have been developed enabling the tailgate to interact in three ways: the facial recognition system to open the vehicle; the 'touch and open' and 'touch and stop' systems work through conductive paint and an obstacle avoidance system for ground level or higher levels to avoid damage when opening the trunk.
More aerodynamic tailgate:
Active technologies such as an active rear spoiler, a side spoiler and a mobile diffuser under the floor, improve aerodynamics and allow a reduction of 2g/km of CO2.
