Cisco and Hyundai Motor announced at CES that they’ve taken a big step towards that future with the development of the next generation ‘hyperconnected car’. This new, in-vehicle network will be featured in premium 2019 Hyundai production vehicles.

Cisco and Hyundai also announced plans to develop a vehicle with a new and innovative approach to communication. The companies announced they would create a ‘flexible and more secure platform’ that would offer a path to innovate and build on smart-vehicle solutions. With a unique combination of networking and auto expertise on deck, the two companies agreed they could work at a faster pace together to disrupt the auto industry.

The two companies say the platform will offer highly secure access to all the data in the vehicle. It’s also described as highly configurable and secure –and offers the flexibility to design and build new services. It will provide ‘over the air updates’ and shorten the lifecycle in bringing new capabilities to market, it is claimed.

The two companies also said they are using ‘Software Defined Vehicle (SDV)’ architectures. This new, in-vehicle network ‘sets the table for adaptive technologies’. It also offers integrated, multi-layer security – as well as full end-to-end networking, they said. It is claimed the software defined vehicle will ‘enable new high speed services through an integration layer between software and legacy hardware’.

Cisco said it is developing first-generation Ethernet solutions that enable 1Gbps. With this comes increased flexibility, lower costs, and better security. it claims.
