China’s vehicle sales rose 19.3% in the first two months of 2008 over last year to 1.52 million units, according to an industry body.

However, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said that sales drop in February over January was due to the Lunar New Year holiday in early February and the snow storms that affected southern China. Vehicle sales in China usually increase ahead of the Lunar New Year and sharply decline during and after the holiday.

China’s January-February passenger vehicle sales grew 18.64% to 1.15 million units from 970,168 in the same period a year earlier, the association said.

Sales of commercial vehicles in the first two months this year grew 21.3% to 371,500 units, from 306,364 in the same period of 2007, it said.

January-February passenger car sales totaled 858,400 units, up 20.53% from the same period last year.
