Ford sales in China are running ahead 30% so far this year at 717,537, up from 551,738 in the first eight months of 2013. Last month it sold 77,506 vehicles, up from 71,183 sold in August last year.
John Lawler, the automaker’s local chairman and CEO, said: “We have experienced an unprecedented period of growth over the last few years. While that high level of year over year growth is not sustainable with our present manufacturing footprint, we are confident that with our new assembly plants coming online in Chongqing and Hangzhou, as well as great new nameplates like the Escort and Mustang, we will continue to attract new customers.”
The Changan Ford (CAF) joint venture broke the half million mark with 522,394 vehicles sold in the first eight months of 2014, up 33% from 394,017, sold during the same period last year.
According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the Focus was the best-selling nameplate in China for both July and for the first seven months of 2014 while Mondeo, Kuga and EcoSport sales also grew significantly.
Ford’s imported vehicles – Explorer, Edge, Focus and Fiesta STs – are also selling well, the company claimed. Together, imported vehicle sales have risen 66% for the year to 23,974 compared with 14,399 in the first eight months of 2013.
Jiangling Motors (JMC), the commercial vehicles JV, sold 171,169 vehicles in the year to date, up 19%. August sales were steady, at 16,200.
