General Motors‘ joint venture Shanghai GM has recalled over 100,000 Cadillac SRX sport utility vehicles in China – the automaker’s largest market – over a faulty rear suspension component that could pose a safety risk.

Shanghai GM will call back and repair 107,016 SUVs that were made from July 2009 to last month because of loose toe adjusters, Bloomberg News cited the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, or AQSIQ, as saying on its website.

“A loose toe adjuster link can cause the vehicle to sway or wander at highway speed, activate the vehicle’s electronic stability control system, and cause excessive wear to the threads in the link,” GM said. “Additionally, the rear suspension may make loud metallic noises, particularly when the vehicle is traveling over bumps or potholes. If the threads in the link become worn, the link may separate.”

A US spokeswoman told Bloomberg the recall is part of a campaign started in the US where 289,566 vehicles were involved and a stop-sale notice was issued for unsold stock.

GM was aware of three crashes and two injuries related to the condition, the spokeswomansaid, adding she didn’t know where the incidents took place.

The number of vehicles recalled is equivalent to double the tally of Cadillacs GM sold in China last year. The company is forecasting Cadillac sales to climb to 70,000 this year and 100,000 the following year. It projects that one in 10 vehicles sold annually in China will be luxury models by the end of the decade, Bloomberg said.
