Light vehicle sales in Canada rose 6.4% last month from a year ago, boosted by strong performances by Toyota and Honda, who earlier this week also reported big rises in US sales for the month.

Total sales for the month were 143,000 of which Toyota took 16,800, up 21.9% from a year ago, and Honda 12,900, a 16% increase.

Ford sales fell 8%, including an 11.9% drop in car sales to 5,000 and a 6.9% t drop in truck sales to 18,600.

Total September Ford sales of 23,600 compared with sales of 25,656 in the same period last year. Year-to-date sales were down 0.1% at 219,182 vehicles.

Chrysler saw sales rise 2% to 19,555, taking year-to-date sales to 194,600, a 6% increase.

“Fuel-efficient vehicles like the Dodge Dart and Fiat 500 helped grow our passenger car sales by 36% in September,” said Chrysler Canada boss Dave Buckingham in a statement.

General Motors said that sales rose 12% in the month to 18,760 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.
