The Brazilian subsidiary of auto-giant General Motors announced Wednesday (20/12/00) that it is to export its subcompact Corsa model to China from the beginning of 2001, reports Associated Press.

The report says that unassembled Corsa sedans and station wagons will be shipped to an assembly plant operated jointly by GM and the Chinese government. The first shipments will be made sometime early next year, with the Corsa model to be marketed as the Buick Sail in China.

GM’s Brazilian unit will also begin exporting unassembled Blazer sports utility vehicles alongside S10 double cabin pick-up trucks to China early next year.

Announced in 1998, the export contract – worth $US710 million – will see nearly 219,000 units shipped over a period of 10 years for assembly at GM`s Shenyang plant.
