French supplier A Raymond has celebrated the opening of its first manufacturing plant in Brazil.

The fastener and connector supplier first established a sales office in Brazil in 1996, and around five years ago started some low volume production in a lesed building in the city of Valinhos, state of São Paulo. At that time, imported components accounted for 70% of the company’s revenues.

The decision to build a new plant was taken when exchange rates soared in 2002.

In 2006 A Raymond expects to derive 73% of its turnover form local production. It is forecasting total revenues of $R38m this year.

The new plant has required an investment of EUR3m. It employs 90 people and covers an area of 6,000 square metres. It produces around 450 fastening components for OE applications.
