BorgWarner has added to its variable cam timing (VCT) order book with fresh programme awards in Europe and China.

In Europe, the company won a programme life extension and a “significant” increase in volumes for a “leading” premium carmaker’s V6 engine family.

In China, it secured a conquest award for a “major” domestic carmaker’s 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine family, replacing the previous supplier.

BorgWarner said the contracts centre on its centre-bolt Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) VCT system.

The company said that, compared with oil-pressure actuated VCT designs, the system reduces and simplifies internal oil passages.

According to BorgWarner, this enables “superior cam phasing response, stronger lock-pin engagement and reduced oil consumption for improved fuel economy”.

For the European customer, BorgWarner is supplying the CTA VCT system for a V6 engine range used in premium and sports cars.

The engine family covers two output classes from 260kW to 375kW, in both hybrid and petrol-only versions.

This programme is already in series production.

The newly awarded volume increase and life extension are set to start in January 2027.

In China, BorgWarner’s system was selected for a high-volume 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine family. The engines will power a range of SUV and saloon models for the Chinese market.

The award replaces the incumbent supplier.

BorgWarner said the selection was supported by the system’s fuel-efficiency performance, local manufacturing footprint and stronger cost competitiveness.

Start of production for the Chinese programme is planned for September 2026.

BorgWarner vice president Henk Vanthournout said: “These awards underline the long-term competitiveness of our VCT portfolio across both hybrid and combustion powertrains.

“They reflect the quality, reliability and cost competitiveness our customers continue to value in our VCT and timing drive solutions.”

The VCT awards follow closely on the heels of another contract win for BorgWarner last month, when the company secured an eTurbo programme with a major European OEM for a hybrid passenger vehicle.
