BMW last week launched a second phase of expansion of its auto parts logistics centre in Shenyang in China’s Liaoning province to strengthen the global role of its Chinese operations.

BMW said it was investing CNY270m (US$38m) to expand its component logistics centre in the Runbang Damei Automotive Supply Chain Industrial Park, located in Shenyang’s China-Germany Equipment Manufacturing Industrial Park.

The automaker was adding 80,000 sq m to its existing logistics centre, including 49,000 sq m of floor space, to strengthen services related to pre-production, post-production and export of auto parts, as well as to expand the centre’s component shipping capacity worldwide.

The first phase of the project was launched in 2020, providing quality control, warehousing, packaging and logistics services for locally made components.

At last week’s ground-breaking ceremony BMW Group’s head of supply chain management and logistics, Michael Nikolaides, said the expanded facility “will play a key role in the carmaker’s global logistics network and support its further expansion in China in cooperation with local partners”. He added the facility “will play a key role in our global logistics network and will support us in supplying our global production sites quickly, efficiently and reliably from China.”

The automaker’s main Chinese joint venture, Shenyang-based BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA), was leading the company’s transition to zero emission vehicles in China. It employs 20,000 people and has a network of 400 local suppliers.
