BMW Group is donating EUR1.5m to various rescue organisations providing emergency aid in recently flooded German regions.

“Thousands of people are seeing their livelihoods in ruins due to the severe weather in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Upper Bavaria. It is essential to take rapid action,” the automaker said in a statement.

The flooding is ‘close to home’. BMW is based in Bavaria, in Munich.

“The scale of the disaster touches us all deeply. Our sympathy is with the people who have lost so much. We want to make a contribution to providing those affected with the most basic necessities,” said the automaker’s Ilka Horstmeier who heads human resources and social affairs.

The group will contact rescue organisations in the affected areas to offer “targeted help where it is most needed”.

Group factories in Munich, Landshut, Dingolfing, Regensburg and even Leipzig in eastern Germany will provide emergency resources and manpower from company fire brigades as soon as the legally required request for support is received from the authorities, the automaker said.
