The European Commission has launched a research project examining the benefits and problems of cars using daytime running lights, as is common practice in Canada, writes Keith Nuthall.
It has issued tenders for research teams to bid for a contract to examine how they reduce accidents, including crashes with pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
The study will also examine concerns that running lights can startle these vulnerable road users, notably people with reduced eyesight.
And it will assess potential negative environmental impacts, such as increased fuel consumption and production of CO2.
