Mazda Australia is to launch a sedan version of the Thailand-assembled 2 (Demio) alongside the hatchback when an updated model with styling changes and equipment upgrades makes its showroom debut next May.

This is the first time the model has been offered in Australia with two distinct body styles and it is expected that customers Down Under will be attracted to the new sedan because of its styling and 450 litre boot capacity. The sedan is already sold in China. Mazda has had an entry in this segment in Australia for years, starting in the 1990s with the four-door 121 sedan.

“Having listened to customer feedback and studied the light segment very closely, we believe that the new sedan offers the potential to engage with a whole new set of customers,” Mazda Australia marketing manager Alastair Doak told local media.

The Australian-specification sedan will have 15-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning and power windows and mirrors plus front, side and curtain airbags.

The Australian 2 range will continue to be powered by a 76kW 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual or automatic transmissions.
