Audi of America has expanded its Traffic Light Information driver assistance feature to two more US cities – Phoenix, Arizona and areas of Kansas City, Kansas.
The system was launched in 2016 in Las Vegas, in collaboration with Traffic Technology Services (TTS). It has since expanded to 10 cities and 2,250 intersections across the country the other 'enabled cities' are: Dallas and Houston in Texas, Palo Alto and Arcadia in California; Portland, Oregon, Denver, Colorado and Washington, DC.
Time to Green
Traffic Light Information, an Audi Connect Prime feature available on some 2017 and 2018 US models, enables the car to communicate with infrastructure.
When the car approaches a connected traffic light, it receives real time signal information from the traffic management system that monitors traffic lights via the on board 4G LTE data connection. When the light is red, the TLI feature will display the time remaining until the signal changes to green in the instrument cluster in front of the driver or in the head-up display if fitted. This 'time to green' information helps reduce stress, Audi claims, by letting the driver know approximately how much time remains before the light changes.
Future versions could include integration within the vehicle's start/stop function, Green Light Optimised Speed Advisory (GLOSA), optimised navigation routing, and other predictive services.
