Toyota Argentina produced 69,045 vehicles in 2007, up 7.2% from 2006, amid strong local demand and rising exports for its Hilux pick-up truck, the company told just-auto on Tuesday (19 February).

The Japanese automaker continued to invest in its Zarate, Buenos Aires, factory, earmarking $US41.5m to expand its stamping, plastic parts and painting units, up from a similar capital spend in 2007.

Toyota said it sold 28,115 units in 2007, up from 22,144 in 2006, driven by “strong” sales of its Hilux pick-up and SW4 SUV.

At the 2,900-worker Zarate plant, Toyota makes the Hilux pick-up and Hilux SW4 trucks for export throughout Latin America, mainly to Mexico and the Caribbean.

The company said it exported 49,861 units of the two models last year, but did not give 2006 comparison data.
