A flat Russian market is failing to hold back the growth of Lada which, with a 22% share, is way ahead of number two make Kia. Crucially, Renault is putting in more money to maintain the momentum and various new models are not far away from release.

Cars

After replacing the 2105-2107 series models at the end of 2011, the Granta has gone on to become Russia’s best selling car range. The 4.3m long sedan, which uses the same platform as the second generation Dacia/Renault Logan, was once a separate model to the Kalina liftback, five-door hatchback and wagon. These Granta derivatives arrived in 2012. Each has since been renamed with the result being four Granta derivatives including the sedan.

AvtoVAZ took its time to facelift the Granta, the updated car being a debutante at last year’s Moscow motor show. That means we’re unlikely to see a direct successor before 2021 at the earliest. The new model when it comes, should be based on Groupe Renault’s B0+ architecture. The silhouettes in the image are likely to represent the general outline of three of the future body styles.

The slightly larger (4.4m) Vesta is Lada’s second best seller, its year-to-date total of 38,019 registrations in the Russian market being some 3,000 fewer than the Granta equivalent. This model has been available since November 2015 and should be facelifted in 2021. That will also apply to the Vesta Cross, a sedan with plastic cladding and a suspension lift as well as the Vesta SW, an estate, and a crossover version of this car, the Vesta SW Cross.

The successors for the Vesta, Vesta Cross, Vesta SW and Vesta Cross SW should use the B0+ platform and be introduced in 2025.

The other model in the cars range is the Largus, a range of C segment estates which have close links to the original Dacia and Renault Logan MCV. The successors should begin to be rolled out in 2020, by which time some of the variants in the existing line-up will be nine years old.

The Largus had its global debut at the Moscow motor show in August 2011. There are both delivery van (Largus wagon) and seven-seater (Largus Universal) passenger variants. As for the Largus Cross, this is the wagon with protective grey plastic on the bumpers, around the wheelarches and on the side sills. It premiered at the Moscow motor show in August 2014, going on sale in Russia three months later.

SUVs

The 4×4 remains easily the brand’s oldest model, this ladder frame 4×4 dating to 1977. The most recent round of updates was announced in September 2018.

The replacement has been endlessly delayed with the most recent shelving taking place three years ago as the Russian economy hit its most recent steep downturn and AvtoVAZ took the decision to dramatically slow spending. Now with the firm’s finances starting to look healthier, the project for a successor is back on.

A three-door design study, the Lada 4×4 Vision, was revealed at the Moscow motor show last August. The current CEO, Yves Caracatzanis, interviewed in late 2018, said the 4×4 would not appear until 2022 as the company was at that time “still in the recovery mode”.

The X-Ray is Lada’s second most successful SUV or crossover, this model having been in production since December 2015. Just shy of two years later, the X-Ray Cross was added. There should be facelifts for both in 2020 and successors in 2023 or 2024. The next generation models will probably be based on the B0+ platform which will debut with the Renault Arkana/Samsung XM3 twins.

AvtoVAZ is not unaware of market trends and if it is ever to become a serious exporter a range of crossovers and SUVs in the A, B, C and D segments will be needed. The company’s thinking was in evidence at the 2016 Moscow motor show. There was where the XCode concept was first seen. The design study will hopefully prove to have been a preview of a C segment SUV which would have the added and crucial benefit of lifting Lada pricing into the air above where it presently competes.

No official statement about building a vehicle similar to the XCode has been made but it is an open secret that a future Lada along these lines is under development. Expect to see it reach production at Togliatti in 2020. After that, a D segment SUV around the same size as the Skoda Kodiaq would be the next logical move.
