Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 1,666 in Q1 2024, versus 2,646 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 11% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Samsung Group filed the most robotics patents within the automotive industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 49 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 19 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Toyota Motor with 45 robotics patent filings, Hyundai Motor (31 filings), and NVIDIA (30 filings) in Q1 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 39% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q1 2024 was in the US with 39%, followed by China (21%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by the US was 15% higher than the 24% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
