The total number of robotics-related grants dropped by 11% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Robotics in Automotive – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 1,310 in Q3 2022, versus 2,661 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Toyota Motor filed the most robotics patents within the automotive industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 33 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 38 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Alphabet with 23 robotics patent filings, Honda Motor (23 filings), and NVIDIA (21 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 37% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 37%, followed by China (13%) and South Korea (7%). The share represented by the US was 12% higher than the 25% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
