The top five companies accounted for 23% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that LG filed the most batteries patents within the automotive industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 426 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 868 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Contemporary Amperex Technology with 291 batteries patent filings, Panasonic (165 filings), and Porsche Automobil Holding (67 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 31% share of total patent filings

The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 31%, followed by China (30%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by the US was 3% higher than the 28% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
