Mazda Motor Corporation said it had this month signed the United Nations Global Compact this month, becoming a member of the Global Compact Network Japan.

The automaker said: "By joining the UN Global Compact, companies and other organisations make a voluntary commitment to be good corporate citizens by exercising responsible, creative leadership and building a global framework for sustainable growth. The compact has more than 12,000 members in some 160 countries.

"Mazda, which practises corporate social responsibility in its day-to-day operations, will work to uphold the 10 principles of the compact which include protecting human rights, eliminating all forms of forced labour, undertaking environmental initiatives and working against corruption. [We are] committed to contributing to the development of a sustainable society through these activities."
