Aptiv has opened a new technology centre in Boston’s Seaport district, expanding the company’s US engineering footprint.
The new Boston Seaport facility joins Aptiv’s technology centres in Pittsburgh and Mountain View, California, focused on automated mobility-on-demand (AMoD) and data management development.

“Boston has become a leading global city for the development of autonomous driving solutions, making it the ideal location for our new technology centre” said Aptiv president and CEO, Kevin Clark.
“We look forward to working closely with Mayor [Martin] Walsh and Boston’s research centres and talent base to move mobility forward in the City and across the globe.”
Aptiv selected Boston’s Seaport district as the location of its new technical centre due to the City’s technically proficient work force, universities and local government’s track record of supporting technology and growth.
“A year ago, I issued an executive order that welcomed researchers and companies to Boston, inviting them to explore how autonomous vehicle technology can help further our transportation goals of safety, access, and reliability, as outlined in Boston’s long-term plans,” said Walsh.

Automated driving technology has the potential to help the city of Boston increase accessibility to public transit and alleviate congestion.
Opportunities for Aptiv to launch advanced mobility pilot programmes in the Boston market include linking neighbourhoods not directly connected by public transit as well as providing mobility between destinations without nearby transport stations or other options.
“Aptiv intends to apply its mobility solutions to assist the city of Boston with all of its smart city activities, specifically, the ‘Go Boston 2030’ initiative that envisions a more efficient transportation network by leveraging automated mobility,” said Aptiv SVP and CTO, Glen De Vos.
NuTonomy, an autonomous vehicle start-up recently acquired by Aptiv, recently launched an automated driving pilot programme in Boston’s Seaport district, where challenging urban surroundings and diverse weather conditions create conditions for automated driving development.
