The move gives makes the USA the first country to host two accredited international shows – the other is in Detroit, held usually early in January.

The LA show – held in ‘import central’, California, a large market for Japanese and South Korean imports and home to the HQs of brands such as Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Kia – has long been a bitter rival of the Detroit exhibition.

Journalists have criticised the need to cover the LA show’s press days so soon after the Christmas holiday break in the relatively mild LA winter and then rush thousands of miles to frozen Michigan for the Detroit event.

Next year will actually see two LA shows. The first hosts media days on January 4-5 and the public from January 6-15, while the media days for the so-called 2007 LA Auto Show, the first international event, are November 29-30. Public days are December 1-10.
