Graeme Roberts June 28 2024

Walmart Canada has received its first hydrogen fuel cell powered truck from Arizona-based Nikola.

It claimed to be the first major retailer in Canada to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck to its fleet and it's now in use in Mississauga, Ontario, just outside Toronto.

The Class 8 tractor has a range of about 800km (500 miles) and is said to reduce emissions by 97 metric tons of CO2.

Gonzalo Gebara, president and CEO, Walmart Canada said the move was an important milestone “on our journey to becoming a regenerative company," and an example of how it will “spark change within the industry".

In 2022, Walmart said it was expanding transportation pilots with electric, hydrogen and natural gas powered vehicle makers as part of its 2040 goal to achieve zero emissions across its global operations which include its fleet of 10,000 tractors and 80,000 trailers, Reuters reported.
