Volkswagen of America has started assembly of the all-new 2027 Atlas family at its US Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant.

Introduced to the Chattanooga assembly line in December 2016, the Volkswagen Atlas is designed specifically for the North American market. The three-row SUV prompted an initial $900 million expansion of the Chattanooga plant.

Chattanooga has assembled more than one million Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles.

“Starting assembly of the all-new 2027 Atlas is an exciting milestone for our Chattanooga team,” said Henning Habicht, Head of Volkswagen Chattanooga Operations. “This achievement reflects the skill, dedication, and commitment of our workforce, whose craftsmanship and attention to detail are at the heart of every vehicle we assemble.”

Powered by a 2.0-litre EA888 evo5 turbocharged engine producing 282 horsepower, the latest Atlas model delivers the highest output in the nameplate’s history while improving efficiency compared with the previous generation, VW says.

VW employs more than 4,000 employees in Chattanooga.
