German automaker Volkswagen has launched its locally produced Tayron seven-seater SUV in Malaysia, as the company moved to strengthen its model range in Southeast Asia.

The Tayron is assembled at Volkswagen's plant in Pekan, Pahang state, alongside the Touareg SUV and the Golf passenger car. It slots in between the Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, which are already on the market.

The Tayron will initially be available in two variants, the Elegance priced at MYR 189,890 (US$ 46,700), and the R-Line which is expected to be priced at around MYR 260,000 (US$ 64,000).

The Tayron Elegance is a mild hybrid model featuring the company’s 1.5-litre eTSI engine, with a maximum power output of 150PS. The 48-volt hybrid system features the company’s ACTplus active cylinder management system which deactivates two cylinders under light loads to improve fuel efficiency.

The R-Line variant is powered by Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI engine, which has a maximum power output of 265PS, and driven by the company’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Both variants feature a seven-speed DSG transmission system and Dynamic Chassis Control Pro adaptive suspension.
