Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation reported a 6.4% year-on-year decline in global sales to 885,207 vehicles in May 2026, including the company’s Daihatsu subsidiary, with sales in Japan rising by 8.3% to 156,639 units, while overseas sales fell by 9.1% to 728,568 units, with shipments affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In the first five months of the year, the group’s global sales fell by 2.1% to 4,463,796 units, with sales in Japan rising by 5.6% to 900,942 units, while overseas sales fell by 3.9% to 3,562,854 units. The data do not include sales by Japanese truck-maker Hino, which was spun off from the group at the end of March 2026.
Global sales of Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicles combined fell by 3.5% to 4,140,444 units year-to-date, with sales in Japan rising by 2.3% to 655,859 units, while overseas sales fell by 4.5% to
3,484,585 units. Sales in North America fell by just under 1% to 1,199,804 units in this period, reflecting a 1.2% decline in US sales to 1,030,598 units, while deliveries in Latin America (excluding Mexico) fell by 6.5% to 189,600 units. In Asia, excluding Japan, sales declined by 5.5% to 1,195,741 units, reflecting mainly a 15% drop in China to 579,419 units. In Europe, volumes were slightly lower at 506,095 units.
Toyota and Lexus reported a 6.8% rise in global sales of electrified vehicles to 2,217,174 units in the first five months of 2026, accounting for almost 54% of total sales. Global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by 138% to 155,074 units, most of which were sold overseas, while sales of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) rose by 2.3% to 1,915,659 units.
Daihatsu’s global sales increased by almost 10% to 295,466 units year-to-date, with sales in Japan growing by over 11% to 235,598 units, while overseas sales increased by 5% to 59,868 units.
