Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it plans to sell its US-made Tundra pickup truck and Highlander SUV in Japan this year, under a programme introduced earlier this year which allows US-made vehicles to be sold in Japan without undergoing Japan-specific certification testing.
In the last few months, Honda and Nissan have also announced plans to sell US-made vehicles in Japan under this scheme, in support of a broad-based import tariff agreement reached last year between the two countries.
The Toyota Tundra and Highlander will initially be sold in Japan through the Toyota Mobility Tokyo network, starting in April, before being rolled out across the country later in the year. The automaker is also preparing to sell the US-made Camry in Japan later this year.
The Tundra full-size pickup truck is powered by a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine and a ten-speed automatic transmission. It is produced at Toyota’s plant in San Antonio, Texas.
The Highlander is a three-row mid-size SUV produced by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, featuring a hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.5-litre engine and an electric motor with a maximum combined power output of 184 kW.
