Toyota Motor launched a new entry-level Hilux-based pickup truck in Indonesia last week, the Hilux Rangga, with the aim of increasing the popularity for the its pickup truck range within the country’s small business sector and among private buyers.

The Japanese automaker’s local distributor, PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), claims the new Hilux Rangga is a versatile and reliable mobility solution designed “to support various business needs and also for personal use”.

The single-cab Hilux Rangga, first unveiled at last year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, has a radial new body design and a 1.2-ton payload. It comes with two engine options, the 2.0L 1TR-FE petrol unit and the 2.4L 2GD-FTV diesel unit.

Like the exiting Hilux pickup trucks, the Hilux Ranggas are imported as built-up units from Thailand. They aim to fill the void in the local market left by the discontinuation of the locally-made Kijang-based pickup truck some two decades ago. TAM confirmed it aims to establish “a conversion ecosystem based on a trusted value chain network, including more than 70 local body builders with proven track records”.

The entry-level 2.0L petrol model with manual transmission is priced at IDR189m (US$12,240), while the range-topping 2.4L diesel model costs IDR245m (US$15,900). This compares with IDR408m (US$26,400) for the existing single cab Hilux 2.4L diesel model.

TAM’s president director Hiroyuki Ueda said in a statement: “Today marks an important milestone for TAM, because we officially launch a vehicle specifically designed to support the wider mobility needs of the Indonesian people and contribute to the welfare of all. As a mobility company, Toyota strives to provide “Mobility for All” by presenting the all-new Hilux Rangga as an agile, reliable mobility solution designed to meet the diverse needs of individuals, businesses and communities.”
