Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that it has launched a completely redesigned Hilux pickup truck in Japan, a popular utility vehicle in the country that the company says has fulfilled a wide range of uses, from work to outdoor leisure activities. It was first launched in 1968.

The new Hilux features an updated exterior design which Toyota says combines a solid and sharp styling under the ‘Cyber Sumo’ concept, while providing increased interior space and a centrally-positioned 12.3-inch digital display. It is available in two variants, the Z and the Z Adventure, priced at JPY 4,980,800 (US$ 31,250) and JPY 5,500,000 (US$ 34,375) respectively, including consumption tax.

Both variants feature the company’s 1GD FTV 2.8L diesel engine, coupled with the 6-speed ECT automatic transmission and part-time 4WD, providing improved fuel economy and driving performance. It retains a cargo capacity of 500 kg, supported by a traditional ladder-frame structure.

The new Hilux features an enhanced Toyota Safety Sense system that includes Proactive Driving Assist, which supports driver steering and braking operations on public roads, and a Pre-Collision Safety system that detects oncoming vehicles when turning right at intersections and pedestrians crossing from the opposite direction when turning right or left.

The new model is also equipped with connected functions that support a safe and comfortable driving experience, including Connected Navigation and Help Net, which automatically connects to an operator when an airbag deploys, helping to ensure a rapid emergency response.
