Toyota Motor Corporation reported a 2.8% year-on-year rise in global sales to 949,153 vehicles in September 2025, including its Daihatsu and Hino subsidiaries, driven by a 4.2% increase in overseas sales to 769,028 units, while sales in Japan fell by 2.8% to 180,125 units. The strong first-half rebound in Japan, following the extensive production stoppages last year at the group’s small-car unit, Daihatsu, due to a safety test rigging scandal, has gone into reverse.
In the first nine months of 2025, Toyota Group’s sales increased by 5.8% to 8,358,426 units, with sales in Japan rising by almost 15% to 1,545,358 units, while overseas sales increased by 3.9% to 6,813,068 units. Toyota remains the world’s largest vehicle manufacturing group, with Germany’s Volkswagen Group trailing in second place.
Global sales of Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicles increased by 4.7% to 7,783,007 units year-to-date, with sales in Japan rising by almost 5.7% to 1,128,125 units, while overseas sales increased by 4.6% to 6,654,882 units. Sales in North America increased by 7.1% to 2,171,163 units, while sales in Latin America (excluding Mexico) rose by 2.7% to 370,562 units. In Asia, excluding Japan, deliveries rose by 3.7% to 2,367,645 units, mainly reflecting strong growth in China, India, and Vietnam. In Europe, sales increased by just 2.2% to 895,099 units.
Toyota and Lexus reported a 14% rise in global sales of electrified vehicles to 3,703,634 units in the first nine months of the year, accounting for 48% of total sales. Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by over 26% to 136,190 units, almost all of which were sold overseas, while sales of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) rose by 11% to 3,297,211 units.
Daihatsu’s global sales increased by 31% to 492,210 units year-to-date following last year’s production stoppages, with sales in Japan rebounding by 59% to 391,248 units, while overseas sales dropped by 23% to 100,962 units.
The group’s commercial vehicle unit, Hino Motors, reported a 10% decline in global sales to 83,209 units in this period, with sales in Japan falling by almost 17% to 25,985 units, while overseas sales declined by over 5% to 57,224 units.
