Toyota global sales rise 4% in July

Decline in Japan offset by rising overseas sales.

David Leggett August 29 2025

Toyota Motor Corporation has reported a 4.2% year-on-year rise in global sales to 963,796 vehicles in July 2025, including its Daihatsu and Hino subsidiaries, driven by a 5.9% increase in overseas sales to 782,037 units, while sales in Japan fell by 2.3% to 181,759 units. The rebound in Japan looks to have come to an end, following the extensive production stoppages last year at the group’s small car unit Daihatsu, due to a safety test rigging scandal.

In the first seven months of 2025, Toyota group sales increased by 5.4% to 6,508,676 units, with sales in Japan surging by 22% to 1,230,786 units, while overseas sales increased by 3.9% to 5,277,890 units. Toyota remains the world’s largest vehicle manufacturing group, with Germany’s Volkswagen Group trailing in second place.

Global sales of Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicles increased by 5.5% to 6,058,731 units year-to-date, with sales in Japan rising by almost 10% to 903,694 units, while overseas sales rose by 4.6% to 5,155,037 units. Sales in North America increased by 5.8% to 1,693,280 units, while sales in Latin America (excluding Mexico) rose by 6% to 286,709 units. Sales in Asia (excluding Japan) rose by almost 5% to 1,818,729 units, reflecting strong growth in China, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. In Europe, sales increased by just 1.4% to 705,985 units.

Toyota and Lexus reported a 17.5% rise in global sales of electrified vehicles to 2,906,619 units in the first seven months of the year, accounting for 48% of total sales. Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by over 18% to 99,975 units, almost all of which were sold overseas, while sales of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) rose by 15% to 2,598,902 units.

Daihatsu’s global sales rebounded by 44% to 384,653 units year-to-date following last year’s production stoppages, with sales in Japan surging by 88% to 306,230 units, while overseas sales dropped by 24% to 78,423 units.

The group’s commercial vehicle unit, Hino Motors, reported a 7% decline in global sales to 65,292 units in this period, with sales in Japan falling by almost 13% to 20,862 units, while overseas sales declined by 4% to 44,430 units.
