Toyota global sales drop 4% in August

Effects of vehicle certification scandals in Japan

David Leggett September 30 2024

Toyota Motor Corporation reported a 4% year-on-year drop in global sales to 888,689 vehicles in August 2024, with output continuing to be held back by recent vehicle certification scandals and by a powerful typhoon in Japan. The data includes the group’s Daihatsu and Hino subsidiaries. Cumulative eight-month global sales were down also by 4% at 6,976,035 units.

Toyota and Lexus global sales were down by over 3% at 826,863 vehicles in August and by 1% at 6,577,090 units year-to-date (YTD), while Daihatsu’s cumulative sales dropped 39% to 318,113 units YTD and Hino’s sales fell by 10% to 80,832 units YTD.

Group sales in Japan declined by 9% to 109,505 vehicles in August, with production of the popular Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio and Yaris Cross models still suspended since June. Output of the three models resumed in early September. The company also shut down all its domestic plants in late August as typhoon Shanshan approached. YTD domestic sales were down by 18% at 932,154 units.

Group sales outside Japan fell by 5% to 888,689 in August and by 4% to 6,976,035 YTD, reflecting in part the recall of the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX in North America.

Group global production fell by 13% to 808,023 in August and by 9% to 6,806,258 year-to-date (YTD), with production in Japan down by 16% at 2,342,435 units while output outside Japan fell by 5% to 4,463,823 units.
