The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) announced it is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network to help drive up sales of plug-in vehicles in the country. The company already operates several EV-related charging businesses in collaboration with government departments and owners of major buildings in the capital, Bangkok.

EGAT confirmed it had a total of 211 EV charging outlets in operation in the country at the end of last year and said it aims to increase this number to 321 outlets by the end of 2024, with a further 100 to be added in 2025. EGAT also offers services to other network operators, including the installation of charging facilities and charging infrastructure consulting services, while also operating a smartphone app that helps manage queues at charging stations.

Data from the country’s Department of Land Transport shows there were a total of 141,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in circulation in Thailand at the end of September 2024. Sales of new BEVs in the first nine months of the year increased by 12% to 75,653 units, according to data released last week.
