US automaker Tesla is recalling almost 3 million vehicles sold in China due to safety risks, according to local reports citing China’s State Administration for Market Regulation. A number of other China-based automakers have also been instructed to recall over one million vehicles combined, bringing the total number of vehicles affected by this recall to over 4 million units – China’s largest single vehicle recall programme this year.

The safety concerns relate to electronically controlled “hidden,” or “flush” vehicle door handles commonly used in battery electric vehicles (BEVs). They have come under increased scrutiny recently following a number of reported cases whereby the doors failed to open after an accident, trapping the vehicles’ occupants inside.

The Chinese regulator noted that in severe accidents that cause electrical system failure, the car handles can hinder occupants from quickly opening the doors, or prevent rescue services from opening the doors from outside. Earlier this year, the regulator said that it was looking to ban hidden door handles on BEVs produced by Tesla and many Chinese brands.

The current recall affects some 2.98 million locally-made and imported models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S. Other vehicle manufacturers affected by the recall include BEV manufacturer Xiaomi, which is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles, and Leapmotor with 370,000 vehicles. Other Chinese automakers affected included Xpeng and Geely.
