Tesla has been conducting tests of driverless Model Y vehicles in Austin, Texas, with plans to deliver the first unit in June, according to CEO Elon Musk.

The announcement, made via an X post, comes amid growing anticipation for Tesla’s robotaxi launch.

Musk noted that the testing is “a month ahead of schedule” and reported no incidents during the trials.

Earlier this year, he had indicated that the robotaxi initiative would begin with 10 or 20 Model Y vehicles, with testing originally slated for late June.

While Musk did not specify a launch date, Bloomberg News reported that Tesla is aiming to introduce its robotaxi service in Austin on June 12.

This week, Elon Musk has stepped down as a top adviser to President Donald Trump, ending his short tenure as a Special Government Employee focused on cutting federal bureaucracy.

The company has experienced a decline in sales in the European Union for the fourth consecutive month, with a 49% year-on-year drop in April 2025, selling only 7,261 cars according to ACEA data.

In March, Tesla achieved a milestone towards launching its robotaxi service in the US by securing a transportation charter-party carrier (TCP) permit from the California Public Utilities Commission.

This permit is essential for Tesla to own and operate a fleet for pre-arranged trips, including those involving employees.
