Stellantis-Mercedes JV puts two battery factories on hold – report

The apparent pause comes amid concerns over slowing BEV demand

David Leggett June 05 2024

Bloomberg reports that a joint venture – ACC - set up by Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz, is putting plans for two new battery factories in Europe on hold.

Automotive Cells Company (ACC) was previously planning to build three factories in Europe, but has rowed back on those plans according to the report.

The report said ACC has stopped construction in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and paused work on a site in Termoli, Italy.

ACC Chief Executive Officer Yann Vincent told Bloomberg that one of the options it is considering is to make cheaper lithium iron phosphate cells at the Kaiserslautern plant.

The report also said that ACC will deliberate until the end of this year or early 2025 on how to proceed with the plant in Germany’s Saarland state.

Last year, ACC celebrated the inauguration of its first battery gigafactory in Billy-Berclau Douvrin, France.
