Stellantis has postponed several electric vehicle (EV) programmes following production problems at a key battery partner, reported Bloomberg, citing sources.
The Netherlands-headquartered carmaker is pushing back some fully electric models by as much as eight months after manufacturing setbacks at Automotive Cells Company (ACC), sources told the news agency.
Shortfalls in long-range battery supplies have affected upcoming Peugeot models, with current output reportedly sufficient for only about 1,000 vehicles a month - far below initial targets.
ACC has brought in a team of specialists from China to improve yields and cut waste, while also examining cost-reduction measures at its French operations to contain financial pressure.
According to the report, the disruption comes during a broad operational review led by Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa.
He has already halted several electric projects, including the RAM 1500, and is scaling back plug-in hybrid offerings from Jeep and Chrysler in North America.
The retreat from some EV plans may reduce the number of battery plants the group ultimately requires.
ACC is jointly owned by Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and TotalEnergies.
Its factory in Billy-Berclau near Lille opened in 2023 under an industrial policy push backed by French president Emmanuel Macron.
The problems mirror wider difficulties across Europe’s battery-manufacturing ambitions, following stalled or abandoned projects such as the collapse of Northvolt AB, supported by Volkswagen and BMW.
Stellantis has also been working to recover market share lost under former CEO Carlos Tavares, after customers resisted price increases and raised concerns over product gaps and quality.
Beyond ACC, the group maintains battery ventures with LG Energy Solution in Canada, Samsung SDI in Indiana and China’s CATL in Spain, while ACC has already paused planned plants in Germany and Italy.
Last month, Stellantis announced plans to cut vehicle prices in France as it seeks to regain lost market share.
The company is reducing prices on Fiat, Opel and Peugeot models while reviewing operations worldwide.
