Scania began battery assembly at its base in Sodertalje, Sweden today, enabling serial production of heavy duty, electric trucks.

With the battery assembly in operation we have one of the key enablers in place to accelerate the shift to electrification," said Christian Levin, president and CEO of Scania and the Traton Group.

Top performing cells to be assembled

In 2030, Scania aims for 5% sales of electric vehicles.

"The proof points are being launched one by one and the SEK1.5bn investment in this new battery assembly is one of them," Levin added.

In April, Scania and Northvolt unveiled a jointly developed battery cell designed for heavy duty transport with outstanding performance and a uniquely low carbon footprint. The cell is produced at the gigafactory Northvolt ETT in northern Sweden and will, from today, be assembled into packs at the new 18,000 square metre plant, enabling the start of serial production of electric trucks for regional transport.

Battery assembly employs 550 people and is highly automated.
