Nissan’s global sales fall 10% in May

Both domestic and overseas sales declined last month.

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Company reported a 10.3% drop in global sales to 229,870 vehicles in May 2026, including models sold under the Nissan and Infiniti brands, with sales in Japan falling by 6.4% to 25,967 units, despite strong demand for mini-vehicles, while overseas sales fell by almost 11% to 203,903 units.

In the first five months of the year, Nissan’s global vehicle sales fell by 6.4% to 1,265,662 units, with sales in Japan declining by 3% to 79,911 units, while overseas sales declined by 7% to 1,085,751 units. Sales in China fell by 11.4% to 199,867 units in the five-month period, while sales in North America fell by almost 2% to 564,325 units, with sales in the US down by just 1.1% to 412,094 units, while sales in Canada dropped by almost 14% to 43,338 units, and in Mexico volumes rose slightly to 108,364 units. Deliveries in Europe declined by 13% to 136,586 units, while in other markets combined, volumes were down by over 11% to 184,973 units.

Nissan’s global vehicle production fell by 5.2% to 1,106,658 units year-to-date, with output in Japan falling by almost 2% to 238,590 units, while overseas volumes declined by 6.1% to 868,068 units. Output in the US surged by 22% to 256,091 units in this period, while in Mexico volumes plunged by 27% to 205,445 units, as the company continued to shift production to the US in response to the Trump administration’s trade policies. Production in China fell by 7.5% to 195,844 units, while in the UK output was up by 2% to 110,756 units. Production in other countries combined fell by over 10% to 99,932 units.

Exports from Japan rose by over 4% to 140,605 units in the five-month period, with shipments to North America rising by over 14% to 67,652 units, while exports to other markets combined fell by 3.4% to 72,952 units.
