Nio and CATL plan joint battery R&D

Already extended swappable battery lifespan

Dani Cole March 14 2024

NIO and CATL will jointly develop long life batteries to lower overall EV costs.

Typically, new energy vehicle batteries are guaranteed for eight years. From 2025 to 2032, warranties covering 20m NEVs will expire.

Nio said: “Therefore, it has become a pressing task to address the life span issues of batteries.”

It has extended the lifespan of swappable batteries through research, retaining 80% of capacity after 12 years.

It has developed R&D capability for material synthesis, trial cell production, system assembly, and validation and testing.

Among its patents are 104 related to battery lifespan.

CATL has developed core technology such as slow capacity attenuation, self repairing solid electrolyte interphase film and lithium supplement, to extend the service life of vehicle batteries.

It will plan and develop battery systems with longer service lives for future Nio models.
