Microchip and Hyundai explore single-pair ethernet for vehicles

The US-based semiconductor corporation said the cooperation will focus on evaluating advanced in-vehicle network solutions.

Microchip Technology and South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group have formed a collaboration to examine the potential use of 10BASE-T1S Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) in future automotive connectivity.

The US-based semiconductor corporation said the alliance will focus on evaluating advanced in-vehicle network solutions.

These solutions are designed to support more efficient, reliable, and scalable vehicle architectures as mobility technologies evolve.

A key part of the evaluation will look at how SPE could help meet increasing network demands linked to Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems and connected-vehicle capabilities.

In its statement, Microchip said SPE may streamline vehicle wiring by cutting the need to bridge several standard and proprietary communication buses, which could reduce costs and make network integration simpler.

Microchip automotive, data centre and networking business corporate vice president Matthias Kaestner said: “Our comprehensive portfolio of Single Pair Ethernet hardware and software solutions enables customers to reduce cost, risk, and time to market.

“Our collaboration with Hyundai will support the development of next-generation in-vehicle network solutions that address the mobility needs of tomorrow.”

Under the collaboration, Hyundai Motor Group will work with Microchip on bringing Microchip’s 10BASE-T1S solutions into future vehicle platforms, including electric vehicles, autonomous driving systems and smart-mobility applications.

Hyundai Motor Group will also receive technical support and early access to product samples from Microchip, intended to support faster development and improved system performance.

10BASE-T1S is an automotive and industrial Ethernet standard offering 10 Megabit per second (Mbps) communication over a single twisted pair of wires.

It supports a multi-drop (bus) topology, which allows multiple devices to connect without requiring a central switch, and is designed to extend Ethernet connectivity to edge components such as sensors and actuators.

Commenting on the collaboration, Hyundai Motor Group added: “Partnering with Microchip enables us to leverage their Ethernet expertise, to support next-gen vehicle connectivity. Hyundai Motor Group will accelerate the adoption of 10BASE-T1S technology and enable the next generation of intelligent, connected vehicles.”

The companies said the project is intended to evaluate how SPE-based networking could fit into next-generation vehicle architectures.
