LGES to supply NCM batteries to Polish bus maker

To supply NCM lithium-ion battery cell modules from Wroclaw plant to ICPT GigafactoryX in Pruszkow

Graeme Roberts December 08 2023

LG Energy Solution (LGES) said it had signed a contract to supply 200,000 battery cell modules over three years from 2024 to Poland’s Impact Clean Power Technology (ICPT), a supplier of heavy duty battery systems for heavy transport vehicles.

It would supply NCM lithium-ion battery cell modules from its Wroclaw plant to ICPT’s local GigafactoryX in Pruszkow which would then assemble them into battery packs and systems. The cells are enough to power around 3,000 large commercial electric vehicles, according to the company.

LGES did not disclose the value of the deal but it was estimated to be worth “hundreds of millions of euros”. Ultimately the assembled battery packs will be supplied to Poland’s Solaris Bus & Coach, one of Europe’s largest electric bus makers.

LGES said the agreement was “a concerted effort by the two companies to drive forward electrification in Europe. Batteries for commercial vehicles such as electric buses must withstand a much higher energy flow, up to around 11 times higher than passenger cars, which is why LG Energy Solution will apply NCM chemistry to its batteries to enhance their durability and driving range”.

Seungtaek Hong, head of advanced automotive battery marketing at LGES, said in a statement: “Our [contract] with ICPT, a highly trusted battery systems provider for public transportation, presents us with an exciting opportunity to introduce our outstanding battery technology to the fast-growing European commercial vehicle market."

LGES claims its Wroclaw plant, built in 2016, is the largest lithium-ion battery plant in Europe with a production capacity of 70 giga-watt-hours (GWh) of battery modules and systems per year.
