South Korean technology company LG Innotek revealed that it has begun supplying automotive camera modules to Zoox, a US-based autonomous vehicle company backed by Amazon, for its purpose-built, driverless robotaxis, according to local reports.

Zoox began producing robotaxis without steering wheels last year at a facility in Hayward, California, and has since launched a fully driverless ride-hailing service in Las Vegas – becoming the first company to offer such a service using purpose-built robotaxis.

LG Innotek confirmed that it has signed a multi-year partnership agreement to become a “key perception hardware supplier” for Zoox. The company, which developed its optical technology expertise as a supplier of smartphone cameras, confirmed that its high-resolution automotive cameras have been integrated into Zoox’s sensor suite to provide overlapping fields of view and 360-degree coverage for autonomous driving.

Zoox robotaxis are equipped with twice as many cameras as other smart vehicles. LG Innotek’s cameras offer five different fields of view, depending on where they are mounted, offering 360-degree sensing of the vehicle’s surroundings.

LG Innotek said that the cameras are designed to withstand prolonged exposure to harsh weather, delivering reliable sensing and consistent performance under extreme environments.

The company is scheduled to begin production of camera modules later this year for Tesla’s autonomous Cybercab robotaxi, strengthening its position in the growing autonomous vehicle market.
