Hyundai to complete integrated battery R&D centre by end 2026

New US$816m Future Mobility Battery Campus to improve automakers EV competitiveness.

Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) confirmed that it is on target to complete construction of its new KRW 1.2 trillion (US$ 816 million) electric vehicle (EV) battery R&D hub in Anseong City, South Korea, by the end of 2026. The South Korean automaker held a topping-out ceremony for its Future Mobility Battery Campus at the end of November, after construction began in January 2025.

With the new integrated R&D centre, covering an area of 197,000 sq m, HMG aims to step up the development of new battery technologies and improve its competitiveness in the global EV market. Until now, HMG has conducted advanced research on battery materials, cell design, and process technologies at separate R&D facilities located in Namyang and Uiwang in South Korea.

Heui Won Yang, the head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D operations, said in a statement: “Through the Future Mobility Battery Campus, we aim to seamlessly connect the entire battery ecosystem to foster cross-industry collaboration and accelerate technological advancement. We are committed to strengthening Hyundai Motor Group’s EV battery competitiveness and advancing global electrification through strategic collaborations

HMG said it expects the Future Mobility Battery Campus will allow it “to build stronger partnerships with battery manufacturers and drive shared growth across the entire battery value chain,” adding that the facility will provide “advanced infrastructure and data-driven insights that enable faster technology commercialization and more efficient validation processes.”

The new Future Mobility Battery Campus will be HMG’s first comprehensive battery research and development hub, enabling the company to:

  • Internalise core battery capabilities, including cell design, process engineering, and integrated control systems linked to EV battery management.
  • Integrate battery technology R&D across design, production and application processes, to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and seamless vehicle integration.
  • Validate breakthrough technologies in high-precision, real-world conditions that accurately reflect diverse and detailed vehicle requirements.

Key areas of focus for the Future Mobility Battery Campus include:

High-Precision Validation

· Battery cell production process replication, including electrode production, assembly, and activation steps under conditions similar to real production environments using advanced equipment.
· Integrated testbeds allowing for iterative validation, including repeated testing of safety, quality, and scalability of key battery technologies.
· Battery lifecycle testing to verify battery performance and safety across all stages, from cell to module pack, and vehicle integration.

Next-Generation Battery Development

· High-performance lithium-ion cells, initially for EVs and Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs), expanding to diverse formats and materials.
· Adaptability to future mobility demands, developing solutions that meet evolving market and technology trends.

Digital and AI Integration

· Predictive modelling and automation, using AI-based tools and automated testing to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
· Big-data analytics to improve reliability and optimize performance through advanced data-driven insights.
