Hyundai Mobis Company, the main components unit of South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group, has announced it has reached a final agreement to sell its automotive lighting business to French components manufacturer OPmobility.
OPmobility, formerly known as Compagnie Plastic Omnium before it was rebranded in 2024, has agreed to pay an enterprise value ofKRW 600 billion (US$ 441 million) for Hyundai Mobis’s 100% stake in its lighting business, which was in the process of being spun-off into a standalone company.
Hyundai Mobis' lighting business generates annual revenues of KRW 2.5 trillion (US$ 1.8 billion) and has five manufacturing plants located in South Korea, China, Mexico and the Czech Republic.
Hyundai Mobis said in a statement: “The decision to sell the business marks a significant milestone in the company’s transformation into a future mobility solutions provider, while also helping enhance its corporate and shareholder value."
OPmobility said the acquisition will help scale up its existing automotive lighting business in a fast-moving mobility industry, and is in line with its diversification strategy. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027, subject to obtaining customary antitrust and regulatory approvals.
OPmobility’s CEO, Félicie Burelle, said in a statement: "The combination of Hyundai Mobis lighting business with our own lighting activity will enable us to reach a new scale and create a leading player in the automotive lighting market. Thanks to the strong complementarity of the two businesses, this move will strengthen our presence in Asia, North America and Europe. It will expand our expertise and strengthen our unique positioning as a supplier able to deliver and integrate seamlessly both exterior systems and lighting solutions.
Above all, it will further deepen our partnership with Hyundai and Kia, one of the world’s leading automotive groups. This operation is fully aligned with our strategy of technological leadership, geographic expansion and customer diversification. On behalf of OPmobility, I am looking forward to welcoming our Hyundai Mobis’ lighting colleagues.”
